Borrowing rights

Members (staff, students on placement, volunteers and external members) can borrow a total of ten standard loan items for four weeks from the BASE collection.

Books sourced from libraries outside the ‘BASE’ area do not count towards your borrowing limit.

Members can reserve up to ten items including books from any library, overnight loans from your home library, equipment loans from your home library, multimedia loans (1 week, 2 week, 4 week or 8 week) from any library and multimedia overnight loans from your home library.

Reserved items will automatically be sent to your home BASE library.

You can renew an item three times without returning it, unless all copies are reserved. If you wish to borrow the item again, it should be made available to other members first for at least one week. Except where there are sufficient copies available in the library, at that time, for all members to use.

Journals cannot be borrowed.

You cannot borrow any items until your account has been recorded, checked and approved on the BASE library system.

Members can borrow from and return items to any BASE library. Please check with the library for access restrictions and please be aware that we may validate your identity when visiting in person.

Changes to the BASE Library Service

As a response to Covid-19, some BASE libraries have now closed their counter services (all library closures will be posted on the Locations page). All library teams are still providing an enquiry service and can be contacted by email and phone if their counter is not open. Reservations are not available, however you may browse the catalogue and access e-resources. Items on loan have been automatically renewed and will not incur a fine. Most libraries are not providing new member registrations. More information on current service can be found here.
